A Local Travel Advisor’s Guide to the Heart of the Midwest
Published February 20, 2025
Ladies and Gentlemen, Your Celebrity Guest Host Is… Hannah Roper!
Allow me to introduce myself! My name is Hannah Roper, and I am a travel advisor for Picture This Travel. As a travel advisor, I specialize in curating your perfect vacation and supporting your travel adventures from start to finish! My ultimate goal is to match your travel style with the ideal destination, so you can explore more and stress less.
I grew up in Kansas City, Missouri, and currently live in the metro with my husband and 2 daughters. My all-time Fountain City Fantasy meal would be The Rockhill salad from The Rockhill Grille, paired with their house-made tator tots. Next, I would wash it down with a pitcher of margs from Ponak's with KC fav, Paul Rudd, while atop the Liberty Memorial, soaking in the views. A girl can dream, right?
When I'm not planning or curating dream vacations for others, I enjoy reading, writing, traveling, and spending time with friends and family.
As someone with a passion for traveling, I’ve had the privilege of exploring many parts of the world and experiencing different cultures. But no matter where my travels take me, I’m always drawn back to my home, Kansas City. We are often overlooked as a travel destination, but ask any local, and they’ll tell you that Kansas City is full of charm, incredible food, and vibrant culture. After all, we are the heart of the Midwest—and yes, we were cool long before T-Swift came to town.
If you’re planning your next weekend getaway, or want to escape and explore a new city, you’ve come to the right place! As a local travel advisor who knows this city like the back of my hand, I’m here to show you how to spend three epic days in KC. Whether you’re a foodie, a history buff, or someone who just loves a good rooftop bar, there’s something for everyone.
Let’s explore!
Day 1: Welcome to KC
When You Arrive: Check-In at the Crossroads Hotel
2101 Central Street, Kansas City, Missouri
Your Kansas City adventure begins at one of my favorite hotels in the city, the charming Crossroads Hotel, nestled in the heart of the Crossroads Arts District. With its cool, artsy vibe, the hotel offers fantastic food options and stunning rooftop views. Enjoy Italian cuisine at Lazia, or enjoy the more casual XR, serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I’ve had some amazing brick oven pizza there a handful of times and it’s delicious! After dinner, unwind at the upscale Percheron Rooftop Bar, which offers sweeping views of the city skyline. It’s the perfect spot for your first KC cocktail (or three!)—no judgment here.

Mid-Day: Lunch at Joe’s Kansas City BBQ
3002 W. 47th Avenue, Kansas City, Kansas
One of the things Kansas City is best known for is our BBQ . In KC, barbeque isn’t just a meal—it’s a way of life! (And, it’s likely why you’ve found your way to this blog!) Joe’s Kansas City Bar-B-Que is a must-visit spot in the city. Whether you’re craving their delicious burnt ends or the legendary Z-Man sandwich, you won’t be disappointed.
PRO TIP: The line can be long, but trust me, it’s worth the wait! Just make sure you’re prepared to be stuffed.
Afternoon: Explore the Crossroads Arts District
Now that you’re back at the hotel and in a BBQ coma, it's time to walk it off while exploring the Crossroads Arts District. This neighborhood is filled with local art, funky shops, and murals that are perfect for an Instagram post. They also have tons of restaurants and unique breweries that I love!
Oh, and if you’re here the first Friday of the month, don’t miss the First Fridays event, where the entire district comes alive with local artisans and their creations.
Evening: Dinner at The Fontaine
901 W. 48th Place, Kansas City, Missouri
After a day of exploring, treat yourself to a fancy dinner at Nine Zero One, located inside the lovely Fontaine hotel. It’s the perfect spot to feel like a sophisticated traveler—without ever leaving Kansas City. They have a menu full of modern cuisine and creative cocktails. Go ahead and splurge a little! After all, you’re on vacation, right?
Craving something different? Right across the street from The Fontaine is T'ähä Mexican Kitchen, which has great ambiance and a delicious drink menu. I dined there last week with some friends, and we loved the atmosphere and the food. It’s worth checking out!

Day 2: Culture, Cocktails, and a Touch of Nostalgia
Morning: Visit the Country Club Plaza
Start your second day with a trip to the Country Club Plaza, a shopping and dining district that feels straight out of Spain. The fountains, tiled buildings, and cobblestone streets make it a super charming place to wander around. Grab a coffee from one of the local cafés, do some window shopping (or people watching), and explore the city. Make sure you take the chance to snap a selfie with one of the Plaza’s many fountains. You’re in Kansas City, the City of Fountains, which is home to over 200 of them!
Next, if you're looking for a place to dive into art, the nearby Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art is a must-visit. With a collection that spans 5,000 years, it’s free and open to everyone. They have special events, art exhibits, and even weekend activities that are fun for the whole family.
Late Morning: Brunch at The Farmhouse
300 Delaware Street, Kansas City, Missouri
By now, you’re probably starting to get a little hungry. Near the Plaza, you can find The Mixx for more health-conscious guests looking for salads, soups and sandwiches. But I recommend heading back downtown and over to The Farmhouse, a cozy farm-to-table gem that’s got some of the best brunches in town! I personally recommend trying the biscuits and gravy or chicken and waffles.
The Farmhouse is in the River Market, which is just northeast of downtown Kansas City, right along the Missouri River. It's a historic neighborhood known for its farmers' market, local shops, restaurants, and waterfront views. After you eat, make sure to take some time to explore!

Late Afternoon: Explore the West Bottoms OR Explore the 18th & Vine District
After that delicious brunch, you’ve got two awesome ways to spend your afternoon, both packed with history and unique Kansas City finds.
First, you can check out the West Bottoms. This historic district is filled with antique shops, vintage treasures, and a gritty, cool vibe. It’s the perfect place to wander and discover something special. Two of my favorite shops in this district are Serendipity and Good Ju Ju! There’s so many great options but some of them are only open on the first weekend of the month. If you’re looking for a good place in the West Bottoms to grab a drink or bite, The Ship is nearby and has excellent cocktails.
FUN FACT: If you’re visiting during spooky season, the West Bottoms is home to a pair of famous haunted houses that are totally worth experiencing - Edge of Hell and The Beast.
Alternatively, if you’re into jazz or baseball, make your way to the 18th & Vine District. It’s a cultural hotspot that’s home to the American Jazz Museum and the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum. (If you’re into jazz and baseball, you can buy a combo ticket to both! The two museums share a lobby.) Both are packed with fascinating history, and you’ll walk away feeling like you’ve experienced a part of KC that a lot of people might miss.
Evening: Dinner and Nightlife in the Power & Light District
13 Grand Boulevard, Kansas City, Missouri
Kick off your evening with a meal from one of the many dining destinations in the Power & Light District. Enjoy Bristol, if you’re craving seafood or steak. Want something a little more unique? Check out the County Road Ice House which has options fueled by Joe’s Kansas City Bar-B-Que. They also have burgers, tacos, and ice-cold beverages for you to enjoy. It’s a casual yet fun dining experience!
Once you’ve enjoyed a great dinner, you’re ready to head into the heart of Kansas City's nightlife. No trip to KC is complete without experiencing the Power & Light District. This area is the city's nightlife epicenter, packed with bars, clubs, and rooftop lounges. Some popular options are Howl at the Moon, a lively piano bar, or PBR Big Sky – a country-themed bar offering a dance floor, mechanical bull, and a wide range of drinks. I think it’s safe to say that many KC natives have ridden the mechanical bull at PBR a time or two! Or at least, they’ve attempted to.

Day 3: History, Views, and Last Minute Fun
Morning: National WWI Museum and Memorial
2 Memorial Drive, Kansas City, Missouri
Start your final day with a visit to the National World War I Museum and Memorial, one of the most impressive museums in the country. The exhibits are fascinating, and the views from the Liberty Memorial are incredible. It’s the kind of place where you walk away with a deeper understanding of history—and a new appreciation for the city itself. From Liberty Memorial, you will have a beautiful view of Union Station. This historic building, built in 1914, now serves as both a functional train depot and a popular tourist destination. Featuring restaurants, historical, exhibits, and more, my family regular visits Science City there, which offers a wide variety of activities for kids of all ages to enjoy!
Late Morning: Brunch at Mildred’s
1901 Wyandotte Street, Kansas City, Missouri
After exploring the National WWI Museum, head over to Mildred’s, a beloved coffee shop in the Crossroads. This family-owned café has been serving delicious food for over 25 years. With an impressive menu featuring scratch-made baked goods, specialty coffee, and standout sandwiches, salads, and soups, it's a local favorite. My favorite is their famous “The Standard [Breakfast] Sandwich”, which never disappoints!

Afternoon: Explore Westport
Kansas City’s Westport is a vibrant neighborhood known for its eclectic mix of bars, restaurants, and unique shops. You can spend the day exploring historic architecture, enjoying live music at local venues, or eating at one of their trendy eateries. Whether you're grabbing a craft cocktail or browsing through their unique boutiques, Westport offers something for everyone who is looking to experience KC.
Evening: Stay at the Loews Kansas City Hotel
For your final night, switch things up and stay at the luxurious Loews Kansas City Hotel. This hotel is right next to the Kansas City Convention Center, and just a short walk to the best dining and entertainment in the Power & Light District. After you check in, grab a drink at their beautiful bar, Bar Stillwell, and toast to a trip well-spent.
If you're feeling extra fancy, head up to their rooftop pool and take in the views of the city one last time before the adventure ends.
Night: Dinner at The Capital Grille
End your Kansas City journey with a memorable dinner at The Capital Grille. Whether you’re craving a perfectly cooked steak or fresh seafood, this upscale restaurant is the perfect place to indulge. I can personally attest to how delicious their steak is! Pair your meal with a glass of wine (or my personal fav - an espresso martini) and enjoy your final evening meal in the city.
