Head for the Hill
A few years ago, when I proposed a Monopoly board layout for KC and included Strawberry Hill, a friend asked, “What’s a Strawberry Hill”. This vibrant Slavic and Latin American community in KCK has a rich history and is full of fantastic spots but even those who may have been to one or two spots have never dug in. Hopefully this highlight reel of Strawberry Hill favorites changes that.
Manhattan Knight
As Grand Boulevard re-opens after another successful Big XII Basketball Tournament, I think back on my first year as a fan of a Big XII school. As a passionate UCF fan, the addition of the Knights to the conference gave me a number of opportunities to support my team this year, including a memorable day in Manhattan, Kansas. These were some of the highlights.
FCS: Best of 2023
For me, this edition of Fountain City Superlatives is always special as I get a chance to recap the year that I had. However, after a year of focusing on almost-exclusively barbeque, I worried that I may not have much more to give. Thankfully, that was not the case. This breaks down the best new things I tried in Kansas City in 2023. Some of the categories you know and love are missing. Some others are brand new. But here lies a, mostly, non-barbeque recap of my year.
FCS: Best of 2022
Every year brings its own path of discovery. 2022 was not only a big year for Kansas City but for me and my own attempts to be more of a tourist in my own city. Of all the new places and things I tried this year, these were my favorites. And so once again, I bring you my end of the year Fountain City Superlatives.
Mi Armour
Before I made Kansas City my home, I will admit that I did not know much of anything about North Kansas City, the suburb just over the Heart of America Bridge from downtown, or its major thoroughfare - Armour Road. With a mix of historic Kansas City institutions and exciting new restaurants, bars, and businesses, every Kansas Citian should make it a point to cross under the Armour Road arch and discover North Kansas City.
KCRW 2022 In Review
Every year, Kansas City Restaurant Week (KCRW) creates a golden opportunity for Kansas Citians to try new restaurants and visit familiar favorites and get unbelievable deals on multi-course meals. As a #FountainCityFoodie, KCRW has long been a vehicle for me to try new restaurants or to eat at places that may be otherwise out of my budget. This year, I took advantage of the incredible specials that are the $15 lunches and these were my experiences.
FCS: Best of 2021
As the year comes to a close, I award my Fountain City Superlatives for the 2021 year. As a deviation from what many publications do, these superlatives are much more personal. They are not necessarily the best in KC - they are just the best new experiences I had in KC in 2021. As always, there’s no voters - it’s just me.
A Walk In The Parks, Pt. II
Since the summer of 2019, my brother Connor and I have embarked on a trip every June to explore a new National Park. After an incredible night in Idaho Falls, we had a memorable breakfast and then made our way to Grand Teton National Park where the beautiful hiking trails and ample wildlife viewing opportunities made this one of my favorite parks I have visited.
Parlor 101
Over the past decade, the food hall has become ubiquitous across America and in 2018, Parlor brought the concept to the Crossroads, and the KC Metro as a whole. A collection of five restaurants and two bars housed within an eclectic dining space, Parlor is a diverse collective of multiple quick-serve culinary styles. This article offers a road map to help you traverse the incredible options at the Crossroads food hall.
