A Year at the Theater
Intrigued by the amazing line-up that was coming to town, I decided to pull the trigger on PNC Broadway tickets this year. The chance to catch eight shows at The Music Hall and the Kauffman Performing Arts Center was one that I had to take advantage of - especially given the chance to add-on Hamilton and Les Miserables. More than anything, each show brought with it the opportunity to have a standing date, downtown, with local dinner and drinks prior in a city where that’s not possible for sports.
The City Board
Earlier this year, Hasbro Gaming and Top Trumps USA announced the release of a Kansas City Edition of Monopoly for the first time in over 25 years. As someone who loves this game and loves this city, I was so excited. But quickly excitement became disappointment as I learned about the nature of property placement in these city edition games. Yet still, I held out hope that this game would be a good thing for KC. With the release of Monopoly: Kansas City Edition yesterday afternoon, this is my first look at the board.
Stop the Shops
While the arrival of fall came far too late this year, the extension of summer into late September did not stop the inevitable “Christmas Creep” which seems to come earlier and earlier every single year. And I’mma need Jack Frost to pump the effing brakes already.
Introducing HERDLE!
In the tradition of Wordle, and all other variations, HERDLE is a version of the game from disKCovery perfectly poised for the World Capital of BBQ. We show you a cut of meat. You have five guesses to get a four letter word correct. Will it be a type of meat or the cut? The only way to know is to play!
Mr. Monopoly Goes To Kansas City
Last Monday, it was announced that Hasbro would be releasing an official Kansas City edition of the popular Monopoly boardgame later this fall. With the company taking suggestions from Kansas Citians, I decided to design my own gameboard. And let me tell you, with so many great neighborhoods and landmarks (and so few spaces!), it was much tougher than I could have imagined.
Close to Home
About 100 miles north of Kansas City lies the seemingly sleepy town of Skidmore, Missouri. Over the past half-century, Skidmore has become notable for the occasional violent and mysterious incidents that have transpired there. Growing up in nearby Worth County, Kansas City filmmaker Clayton Scott has long been intrigued by Skidmore’s grisly past. Real-life crimes in Skidmore were the influence behind his most recent film, “Below the Fold”.
There’s Something About Harry
Exactly seventy six year ago, to the minute, Harry S. Truman was sworn in as President of the United States. As we remember Kansas City's lone Commander-in-Chief, I explore some of Harry's hangouts, presidential pit stops, and other landmarks pertinent to Truman's local legacy. No matter how far Truman got from Independence, the Kansas City area was never far from his heart.
A Most Dangerous Game
At the Hi-Dive Lounge on West 39th, the vintage vending machine that serves as a “mystery beer” dispensary has long been the star attraction. The sweet science of mystery beers is incomplete without the Mystery Beer Draft to determine the selection order of the randomized brews. This piece explores a handful of games that you can play with your friends to determine who drinks which beer.
