A Chance Encounter

It seems that everyone in Kansas City has a Patrick Mahomes story and in that regard, I guess I am no exception. This may not be the best Mahomes story that you have ever read, or your favorite. However, it’s my favorite because, well it’s mine. What it may in fact be is the first Patrick Mahomes story that any Kansas Citian has ever had, and that’s why it must be told.

It’s that time of the year once again! Thousands of people will soon descend upon Omaha, Nebraska for the College World Series as 8 schools vie for the National Championship of NCAA Division I baseball. With it being an easy three hour drive up I-29, I decided to share some of my Omaha favorites with those making the trip.

Crying For Ol’ Buck

I will never forget where I was on December 5, 2021 when the seemingly impossible happened - legendary Kansas City Monarchs first baseman and manager Buck O’Neil was inducted into the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame. And even though, he always told his fans not to cry for him - how could I not?

A Walk In The Parks, Pt. I

Since the summer of 2019, my brother Connor and I have embarked on a trip every June to explore a new National Park. With Southwest opening up flights to Bozeman, MT earlier this year, we knew it was finally time to cross Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons off our list. But first, we had to make an 86 mile detour in the hopes of meeting a Kansas City legend - a man that true Royals’ fans know as “Country Breakfast”.

Sing The Queen City

In the aftermath of COVID-19, I could not wait to travel again! As a baseball fan with the obvious goal of visiting every Major League Baseball stadium, one had always evaded me - Great American Ballpark, home of the Cincinnati Reds. Prepared to fly for the first time in 16 months, I had no doubts where my first trip would be. While I came for the baseball and chili, I found in the Queen City an absolute gem of a city that more people should be talking about.

Many would say that Kansas City’s professional sports run of the last decade is “unprecedented”. What Sporting KC, the Royals, and the Chiefs have accomplished has made this the golden era of Kansas City sports. But, it is not without precedent. This city was home to one of professional sports’ earliest dynasties. While the Chiefs, Royals, and even Athletics, called Municipal Stadium home, it was the house that the Monarchs built. The Kansas City Monarchs were this city’s first champions. Our first dynasty, they are the team that created our tradition of passionate sports fanaticism. These are their stories.

In Pendergast’s Kansas City, America’s truest original art form flourished. Hundreds of nightclubs sprang up across this midwestern den of wanton decadence which created ample opportunity for aspiring musicians. In the neighborhoods of 18th & Vine, new sounds were discovered. New Orleans may have given birth to jazz, and New York may be where it eventually settled down, but it was in Kansas City that jazz came of age.
