Devan’s Dozen: Donut Edition
Donuts are a heap of wistfulness, deep fried in nostalgia, and glazed with childlike innocence. They have a way of transcending time and space to transport a person unlike any other food. There’s just something about donuts that makes everyone a kid again. And everyone has their favorite types and flavors. After over a decade of searching for the city’s best donuts, I decided to finally do a Devan’s Dozen for that food which a dozen comes most natural. These are KC’s best local donut shops.
Devan’s Dozen: Burnt Ends Edition
While it is unclear exactly how long the beef burnt end has been a part of Kansas City’s barbeque tradition, they have been our national calling card for over half a century. These delightful chunks of meat candy are often replicated in other regions but have no doubt, they were created and popularized here. In honor of National Burnt End Day, I talked about my own love affair with burnt ends and ranked my Top 12, make that 13, places to find them in KC.
The Fountain City Foodie’s Guide to the World Capital of BBQ (MO)
Setting out to try every single Kansas City barbeque spot, it can be easy to know where you start, but where does one finish? There’s no set checklist of every BBQ joint in the metro. There’s no order guide of what you must, and mustn’t get! That is, there wasn’t. As I recorded my own decade-long pilgrimage through the Q Capital, one friend joked this was a “BBQ Bible”. Not only did I confirm it, I got a little carried away with the concept.
Part 1 / 2 explores the 9 Missouri counties that comprise KC.
Devan’s Dozen: Fried Chicken Edition
When I was a kid, fried chicken was a special treat. It wasn’t that fried chicken was reserved for special occasions. Instead, it was that fried chicken made any meal a special one. A friend asking me the question a couple years ago of, “What’s the best fried chicken in KC?” spawned a very intentional quest to answer that question. So here are my Top 12 Fried Chicken Spots in KC. If you’re expecting Stroud’s or Go Chicken Go, you won’t find that here.
Devan’s Dozen: Heartland Edition
Similar to the worldwide sensation, the Cow Parade, that came to our city 20 years ago, the Parade of Hearts is a public art installation of 154 fiberglass “KC hearts” by 123 local artists spread throughout the Metro until the end of May. If you don’t have time to see all 154, no worries! These are the 12 you must be sure to visit!
Herstory of the City, Part IV
As my exploration of Women’s History in Kansas City continues, I look westward to Hollywood. Kansas City was once home to one of the largest Film Rows in the nation. More than dispersing film reels to this nation’s theaters, Kansas City was also exporting some of the biggest movie stars in the nation.
Mr. Monopoly Goes To Kansas City
Last Monday, it was announced that Hasbro would be releasing an official Kansas City edition of the popular Monopoly boardgame later this fall. With the company taking suggestions from Kansas Citians, I decided to design my own gameboard. And let me tell you, with so many great neighborhoods and landmarks (and so few spaces!), it was much tougher than I could have imagined.
FCS: Best of 2021
As the year comes to a close, I award my Fountain City Superlatives for the 2021 year. As a deviation from what many publications do, these superlatives are much more personal. They are not necessarily the best in KC - they are just the best new experiences I had in KC in 2021. As always, there’s no voters - it’s just me.
There’s Something About Harry
Exactly seventy six year ago, to the minute, Harry S. Truman was sworn in as President of the United States. As we remember Kansas City's lone Commander-in-Chief, I explore some of Harry's hangouts, presidential pit stops, and other landmarks pertinent to Truman's local legacy. No matter how far Truman got from Independence, the Kansas City area was never far from his heart.
