FCS: Best of 2024
No matter how aware I am of it, this exact article sneaking up on me is becoming a bit of an annual tradition. I am always thankful for this time to reflect on the year that was. So as I recount the “Best of 2024”, and the “Biggest Loss” of the year, it is important to remember that the places named within were not necessarily the very best in KC of a given category or that they were brand new, they were just the best of things that were brand new to me. That distinction is always important.
Mr. Dignan’s Wildcard Ride
There is a magic to October baseball that is beyond definition. During the scorching dog days of summer, I sit at the ballpark sipping on a cold beer dreaming of the days where I can throw on a hoodie and watch this sport I love take on new life. While it has been a long 9 year wait, it seems so short after the previous 29. There was always a faith that we could make it back to this place because unlike the last run, this generation had seen it before.
Waiting for Tonight
I remember the first time my mom told me about Caitlin Clark. Even before I watched her play, it seems there was something special about her. The same could be said for Paige Bueckers. We were supposed to see this match-up several times over the years but we never did. And now, this night, three years in the making, is only hours away, and in my nervousness, I write.
Manhattan Knight
As Grand Boulevard re-opens after another successful Big XII Basketball Tournament, I think back on my first year as a fan of a Big XII school. As a passionate UCF fan, the addition of the Knights to the conference gave me a number of opportunities to support my team this year, including a memorable day in Manhattan, Kansas. These were some of the highlights.
The D-Word
Yesterday, hundreds of thousands descended upon Kansas City to celebrate something we have not seen in modern memory - the crowning of a professional sports dynasty. Even Mother Nature seemed to agree this day was special and gave us the proper weather. A day that was virtually perfect quickly turned sour and a day later, I still struggle to process those thoughts as I quickly pieced them together.
FCS: Best of 2023
For me, this edition of Fountain City Superlatives is always special as I get a chance to recap the year that I had. However, after a year of focusing on almost-exclusively barbeque, I worried that I may not have much more to give. Thankfully, that was not the case. This breaks down the best new things I tried in Kansas City in 2023. Some of the categories you know and love are missing. Some others are brand new. But here lies a, mostly, non-barbeque recap of my year.
Devan’s (Half) Dozen: Ted Lasso Edition
Last week, millions around the world said a bittersweet farewell to Ted Lasso and Premier League club AFC Richmond. Here in Kansas City, the finale hit especially hard as over the past three years, Ted became one of this city’s favorite sons. Given the love that Lasso always showed to his hometown, this edition of Devan’s (Half) Dozen ranks the best Kansas City / Kansas references from the show’s run.
Lucky 63
In a football-crazed town like KC, the NFL draft is always a big deal. Of course there is excitement since Kansas City is the reigning Super Bowl and AFC champs, but more than that - the NFL Draft will be in Kansas City! Brett Veach and company have a whopping 10 picks this year. In exploring those picks and the best player ever taken at each of these picks, I found a pattern that bodes well for KC in this year’s draft.
A Chance Encounter
It seems that everyone in Kansas City has a Patrick Mahomes story and in that regard, I guess I am no exception. This may not be the best Mahomes story that you have ever read, or your favorite. However, it’s my favorite because, well it’s mine. What it may in fact be is the first Patrick Mahomes story that any Kansas Citian has ever had, and that’s why it must be told.
