2Q23: Year of the Pit
This time of year is often a time of reflection and to take stock of everything that the year has brought, but also one to look ahead and set a direction for the coming year. 2023 is going to be a bit more intentional with what disKCovery chooses to cover and in this open letter, I talk about where disKCovery came from and about where it’s going in the coming year.

FCS: Best of 2022
Every year brings its own path of discovery. 2022 was not only a big year for Kansas City but for me and my own attempts to be more of a tourist in my own city. Of all the new places and things I tried this year, these were my favorites. And so once again, I bring you my end of the year Fountain City Superlatives.

Pack Mentality
If there’s one thing that I can take from my time getting to know the guys behind Wolfepack BBQ it’s that, “Barbeque is a community food.” So for this Northtown eatery, who prides itself on innovation, Wolfepack is more than a good pun. It’s an indicator of how this team approaches their craft day-in and day-out. Without their pack, nothing else would be possible.

The City Board
Earlier this year, Hasbro Gaming and Top Trumps USA announced the release of a Kansas City Edition of Monopoly for the first time in over 25 years. As someone who loves this game and loves this city, I was so excited. But quickly excitement became disappointment as I learned about the nature of property placement in these city edition games. Yet still, I held out hope that this game would be a good thing for KC. With the release of Monopoly: Kansas City Edition yesterday afternoon, this is my first look at the board.

Party in the Pit
I have long championed Kansas City’s world-class barbeque scene that makes this city the global capital of smoked meats. Getting the opportunity to attend the inaugural Party in the Pit, which featured 18 local pitmasters, reminded me that what makes this city the World Capital of BBQ goes beyond the restaurants and the offerings, it’s all about the people who are so committed to contributing to this rich history.

Stop the Shops
While the arrival of fall came far too late this year, the extension of summer into late September did not stop the inevitable “Christmas Creep” which seems to come earlier and earlier every single year. And I’mma need Jack Frost to pump the effing brakes already.

Stop the Chop
There is so much to be proud of in Kansas City. Here in this city that constantly disproves the myth of “flyover country”, we have always been passionate about our sports. While our fandom and teams are something to take pride in, not all of the traditions associated with these teams are.

On the Corner
The ever-popular Parade of Hearts pushed me to explore a number of Kansas City neighborhoods, and Armourdale was among them. While it was a giant “Charlie Hustle” heart that first brought me to the neighborhood, it was a old school burger stand across the street that captured it, and has kept me coming back for more.

Until We Meet Again
A few weeks ago, it was announced that Plowboys Barbeque would be forever closing the doors of their locations as the owners look to retire from the restaurant side of things and transition their business. As a longtime fan of this amazing 'que, I had to get one last meal in and go pay my respects to one of Kansas City barbeque's elites.
