Devan’s Dozen: Fried Chicken Edition
When I was a kid, fried chicken was a special treat. It wasn’t that fried chicken was reserved for special occasions. Instead, it was that fried chicken made any meal a special one. A friend asking me the question a couple years ago of, “What’s the best fried chicken in KC?” spawned a very intentional quest to answer that question. So here are my Top 12 Fried Chicken Spots in KC. If you’re expecting Stroud’s or Go Chicken Go, you won’t find that here.

The Big O
It’s that time of the year once again! Thousands of people will soon descend upon Omaha, Nebraska for the College World Series as 8 schools vie for the National Championship of NCAA Division I baseball. With it being an easy three hour drive up I-29, I decided to share some of my Omaha favorites with those making the trip.

A Tale of Two Whiskeys
It is the very best of times for now is the age of bottled-in-bond bourbon in Kansas City. Just a few weeks apart, two iconic KC distilleries (Holladay and J. Rieger) have released a bottled-in-bond bourbon. How is it that a bourbon can be made outside Kentucky? What does it mean to be bottled “in-bond?”? What is the story behind these bourbons? How do they taste? All these answers, and so much more, lie within.
The Other Monument
As this weekend approaches, it marks to many the unofficial beginning of summer. And while, after the topsy-turvy weather of “spring”, summer is most welcome, the reason we have this weekend is Memorial Day. As we take a moment to remember those who fell while serving this country this weekend, consider visiting the beautiful, grandiose World War I monument that boasts a great view of the city’s skyline. No, not Liberty Memorial, I’m talking about the other monument.

Devan’s Dozen: Sauce Edition
Kansas City BBQ is all about the sauce! Or at least, that’s what strangers try to tell us. Our barbeque is so much more than the sauce but there is no denying it has an important role in our city’s history and whether it is robust, smoky, salty, sour, sweet, savory, or spicy - that barbeque sauce is delightful. It’s the cherry on top of the sundae. In honor of National BBQ Month, I ranked the Top 12 Kansas City BBQ Sauce lineups!
Devan’s Dozen: Heartland Edition
Similar to the worldwide sensation, the Cow Parade, that came to our city 20 years ago, the Parade of Hearts is a public art installation of 154 fiberglass “KC hearts” by 123 local artists spread throughout the Metro until the end of May. If you don’t have time to see all 154, no worries! These are the 12 you must be sure to visit!

Introducing HERDLE!
In the tradition of Wordle, and all other variations, HERDLE is a version of the game from disKCovery perfectly poised for the World Capital of BBQ. We show you a cut of meat. You have five guesses to get a four letter word correct. Will it be a type of meat or the cut? The only way to know is to play!

Herstory of the City, Part V
We are still a ways from realizing true equality but we are so much closer than we have ever been. In the battle for equality on the basis of race and sex, so many champions for these causes came right here from Kansas City. In this conclusion to the Herstory essay series, I tell the stories of some amazing women who fought to realize the promise that “ALL men AND WOMEN are created equal”.

Herstory of the City, Part IV
As my exploration of Women’s History in Kansas City continues, I look westward to Hollywood. Kansas City was once home to one of the largest Film Rows in the nation. More than dispersing film reels to this nation’s theaters, Kansas City was also exporting some of the biggest movie stars in the nation.
